How does laser hair removal work?

Laser hair removal works by selectively targeting the hair follicle with an intense burst of light. The light heats the hair follicle to a controlled temperature, disabling future hair growth. The laser works only on actively growing hair. At any given time, you may only have 20%of your hair actively growing. Therefore, it is important to have multiple treatments to eliminate unwanted hair. On the average, it may take 6-8 treatments to achieve at least 50 percent permanent hair reduction, depending on the area and the individual.

Active hairs will shed within 2 weeks of treatment. Post treatment, the area may feel and look sunburned; this can last a few hours to several days. Avoid hot showers! Patients are advised to stay out of the sun for the duration of the treatment, and are advised to avoid sun tanning, tanning beds, self-tanners and spray tans while they are receiving treatments. Anyone on light sensitive prescription medications or Accutane cannot be treated.

In ideal candidates, side effects are extremely rare, but may include mild skin irritation that can take several weeks to resolve.
